Introduction of Dewas Rai

Nepal is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-cultural nation. The indigenous peoples living here each have their own original language, culture, history, and identity. Kirat Dewas Rai is also an indigenous people with its own distinct language, culture, history, and identity. In ancient Nepal, the Dewas Rai are also among the descendants of the first Kirati king Yalambar, who defeated the last ruler of the Mahishapala dynasty, Bhuvan Singh, and became king around the 6th century BCE. The last Kirati king Gasti was displaced when the Licchavis, fleeing Magadha's invasion and leaving their capital Vaishali, came and took control of the ancient Nepalese state; the displaced Kiratis migrated in a large group toward the eastern region. In this region, some Kiratis settled around ancient Nepal itself. History records the Dhulikhel Kirati Chap, the Makwanpur Sen Kirati confederate state, and the Udayapur Chaudandi kingdom. In the 18th century, while King Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha was unifying the Baise-Chaubise kingdoms, there were Chautariya Bajhang Rai of Makwanpur, King Mahendra Singh Rai of Dhulikhel, and King Buddhi Karna Rai of Udayapur Chaudandi. The descendants of these Kirati kings and chieftains are today's Dewas Rais. Thus, due to the Shah-era unitary state system and the loss of all their rights, the lower Kirat Rais fell into oppression; their religion, culture, language, and identity fell into crisis. Being under feudal and exploitative classes, they appear deprived of wealth, education, and opportunity. To study and research these problems, on 3 Bhadra 2061 BS "Kirat Dewas Rai Utthan Samaj Nepal" was formed as an uninterrupted successor organization. After formation, it has been running various programs to build mutual unity among Dewas Rais scattered across various districts and to uplift and develop their lost rights, language, culture, and identity. Geographically, in modern Nepal, dense settlement exists in Makwanpur, Sindhuli, Chitwan, Dhading, Nuwakot, and Kavre of Bagmati Province, and also in Rautahat, Bara, Parsa, and Sarlahi of Province No. 2. There is information of settlement in some other districts too. Based on the organization's own study and the Nepal Statistics Department, the population is around one lakh fifty thousand. Under Shah, Rana, and Panchayat regimes, this indigenous people suffered slavery and oppression; even in the current multi-party federal republican system, due to lack of political access and opportunity, influence of high castes and feudal classes, lack of political and social reservation, and poverty, illiteracy, and lack of awareness in the community, the community's development and uplift has not yet been possible. Therefore, to re-establish the lost glorious identity and rights, all scattered Kirat Dewas Rais must unite and work for community uplift and development from their respective areas — this is today's necessity.
